In keeping with the Asian theme, I have stumbled on an event for those of you into BDSM: The Fourth Annual ShibariCon taking place in May 2007 in Chicago, IL. There are classes, vendors and a Bondage Rodeo by TwistedMonk.Com! Oh my!
Don’t know what “Shibari” is? Neither did I until I researched this piece! Shibari is a Japanese verb that means “to tie or to bind”. This isn’t just any old bondage conference—this is the conference for lovers of Japanese Rope Bondage being held by other lovers of Japanese Rope Bondage.
Not being very BDSM savvy, I didn’t see the point for an entire conference dedicated to this and wondered: why not attend Fetish Night at your local Goth bar instead? But after delving a little further I see that there is a difference between bondage the way I know it and the Japanese way.
Japanese Rope Bondage it is aesthetically way more pleasing meaning it isn’t just a matter of taking a long rope from the trunk of your car and hog-tying your mate and dominate as they get off on the mere idea of being tied!
In the Japanese form, (also known as Kinbaku) the submissive is placed in various asymmetric positions (meant to increase the psychological impact of bondage) and tied up using simple knots that only appear intricate, made of smaller and thinner pieces of hemp or jute. The premise is that the submissive will not only derive pleasure from being tied up, but from the feel of the strategically placed bindings as well.
The closest I have ever come to participating in BDSM is watching episodes of Kink and playing the odd drunken game of ‘Go Fish’ with a Gay-BDSM-themed deck of cards that I was given on my eighteenth birthday! What I can say is that the Japanese way looks far more erotic.
I’d give it a try, but I’ve learned that the reason we Westerners use longer rope is because the average size of the Western submissive is considerably larger than our Japanese counterparts. Guess I’ll have to try some of that Naked Yoga in hopes of shrinking down to a more suitable size!
