New York City has always been one of hot spots in all the world. And now it’s setting another trend: an official city condom. According to Topix.net, Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s administration will soon be launching the official condom of the Big Apple.

The reason behind the new condom? An aggressive program to reduce the spread of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases is underway. But New York already does its fair share of supporting the condom market. The city gives away 1.5 million free ones each month. If you’re too lazy to do the math, that’s about 18 million a year. So who gives away all these free condoms and how do we get some? Well it seems all you need to do is open your eyes and you’ll find them. Free condoms abound and you can get them at places like health clinics and advocacy groups, bars, restaurants, nail salons, nightclubs and even prisons. (But we don’t recommend you go to prison for the condoms - you can get them in other locales).

According to Topix.net’s article, The Duplex, a bar in the West Village, offers free condoms in its foyer and in its bathrooms. Day manager C.T. Cook said they request about 3,000 per month from the city. “It’s very important to show that we encourage safe sex and for people to be responsible,” he said. “If you’re under the influence, you might make poor judgements and act without thinking, so if it’s easier to obtain condoms, this can probably help prevent mistakes.”

But the new condom being launched is different. These condoms will be a brand - much like Trojans or Freestyle, the New York City condom will have its own look, its own original packaging. They intend to brand the condoms because “Brands work, people use branded items more than they use non branded items,” says Thomas Frieden, Health Commissioner.

And we thought people didn’t use them because they didn’t like the way they felt. No word yet on whether or not these condoms will come in lubricated or if they’ll be ribbed “for her pleasure”.
