Erotic Lit By Women: Acceptable In Conservative Indonesia

While the launch of a toned down version of Playboy in Indonesia raised a stink in 2006; there is far more provocative reading material available in this predominenty Muslim country.
Seems that fully covered models and barely a mention of sex is punishable by law, (Editor Erwin Arnada was charged for violating indecencey laws because of the issue) yet, erotic literature featuring S/M and child-rape is racing its way up the bestsellers list without so much as a peep from political and religious leaders or the conservative community.
Erotica written by women has been gaining popularity in Indonesia since 1998 when writer
Ayu Utami’s “Saman” hit shelves and paved the way for many others, making the genre a popular and growing one. (Note to self: Start selling my erotica in Indonesia!!)
The country’s laws obviously need some definition and reworking if an image of a model in a t-shirt and panties is considered indecent, but in the meantime, for the female authors of erotica; this is definitely the place to be!
