According to the Sydney Morning Herald, condoms are coming to Indonesia thanks to an Aussie lady. We know how crazy those Aussies are and she’s taking her efforts into the world’s largest Muslim country with the hopes of promoting safer sex and birth control.
The shop is called The Guard and opened last month in a shopping mall. The Guard is selling hundreds of condoms of most any colour, texture, and flavor you can imagine.
The woman in charge is Sydney native Sarah Bagus, 27. She and her Indonesian husband
Endyk want to show that condoms aren’t just for illicit activities. They want married couples to understand condoms offer the ability to decide how many kids they’ll have.
“We wanted to make people aware of safe sex practices, healthy lifestyles and family planning alternatives,” Bagus said.
“It’s not about freely promoting sexual activity, it’s about health and safety and making people more aware of their options because there’s very little information out there.”
Her husband, a Muslim, said condoms also provided affordable birth control for families with limited incomes.
“Some husbands make 500,000 rupiah ($70) a month and have to support five kids,” he said.
“How can they ever get ahead like that? Our message is that if they have fewer kids, they can give them better education and better opportunities.”
The Jakarta-based couple hasn’t done anything like this before. Good luck you crazy kids!
Bali is one of Indonesia’s most open-minded areas so it was the clear choice for Bagus’ starting grounds for The Guard. She has said she hopes to share her wares around Indonesia as the public becomes more understanding and open to safer sex practices.
However, she thinks her expansion plans are aways into the future because the Indonesian market is still warming to condoms and other safer sex practices.
They only sell 90 million condoms every year in Indonesia. That’s 90 million among 235 million people…if everybody’s using condoms that ain’t a lot of sex y’all.
